Queering the Surgeon

Queering the Surgeon was a performance piece that took place in September of 2021 in Brooklyn, USA. Members of the non-normative community were invited to participate in a hands-on medical art experience taught by a member of the medical, art, and LGBTQ+ community. The aim of this project was to:

  • Queer the practice of medical and surgical education (pedagogy)

  • Decolonize medical and surgical art

  • Expand surgical skills into the realm of creating art

  • Protest the cis white hetero normative nature of medical and surgical education

Participants of the project learned how to surgically drill and craft (animal) bone using the same techniques taught in bone surgery. They then had the opportunity to practice these techniques on locally sourced animal bone, generating data on the effectiveness of these teaching techniques. A visual record of photographs and video was created to document a counter narrative and add to non-normative queer history.
